The Pacers opened the season Friday afternoon against the Agawam Brownies on the road at Shea Field. It was a back and forth affair that saw Agawam make two comeback bids, but both ultimately fell short as Chicopee secured their first victory of the season.
Senior Brandon Berube (1-0) started on the mound for Chicopee going 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs while striking out 5. Mason Scott closed out the final 1 and 1/3, striking out 2 and allowing only 1 hit and 1 run to earn the save.
The Brownies got on the board first in the bottom of the 1st inning scoring 2 runs, but Chicopee battled back over the next three innings, taking a 4-2 lead into the 6th. They would tack on another 2 runs to make it 6-2 before Agawam answered with 3 in the bottom of the 6th to pull within a run. The Pacers got some breathing room in the top of the 7th, scoring a run to make it 7-5. Agawam would then again make a bid to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run to cut the lead to 7-6, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Pacers bats were solid, getting 13 hits and 7 RBI’s. Ramon Jimenez went 4-for-4 scoring 2 runs and driving in an RBI. Mason Scott went 3-for-4, hitting 2 doubles while Tevin Gonzales and Jeff Zombrowksi both recorded two runs. Chicopee bats also caused 3 Agawam fielding errors on the day.
Baseball returns to action Thursday 4/14 against Minnechaug in the Pacer’s home opener.
