Game Recap

Dylan Conover took the Chicopee Pacers on his back and willed his team to a 14-0 victory over Northampton High School. The win improves the Pacers to 4-5 on the season.

Conover was a force on both sides of the ball. Completing 7 of 8 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, running for another touchdown and intercepting two passes on defense.

The Pacers opened the scoring with an 85-yard drive after the first of Conover’s interceptions. The big play was a 48-yard connection from Conover to Stevie Matta that went for 48 yards, taking the Pacers from their own 16 to Northampton 36. Two plays later Conover found Rodney Vazquez for a 33-yard touchdown pass.

The defense held strong, keeping the score at 7-0 through three quarters. As the third quarter transitioned into the fourth, the Blue Devils offense finally began to find it’s rhythm, running nearly 6 minutes off the clock and getting into the red zone. Despite the Blue Devils threatening, the Pacers defense took a bend but not break mentality and forced Northampton to turn the ball over on downs thanks to two incomplete passes from the 14-yard line.

Needing only to execute a 4-minute offense, the Pacers were not content to take the air out of the ball, instead using Juan Robello to gouge large chunks of yardage and flip the field. Moving the ball from their own 14 to Northampton 26. The drive included runs of 12, 37, and 10 yards before bogging down due to a personal foul penalty against Conover. The penalty negated another run of 17 yards by Robello that would have brought the Pacers inside the 10. Conover would make up for it a few plays later though, on a rush to the right side that found a hole for a 17-yard insurance touchdown.

Vazquez sealed the victory with an interception of a pass that would have moved Northampton into the red zone with about 35 seconds remaining.

The Pacers will next be in action on Thanksgiving morning as they will face off against Chicopee Comprehensive in the annual “Sword Game” at 10:30 am at Szot Park.
