To paraphrase the words of the great Rick Flair, “To be the champ, you need to beat the champ” and today the Champ is Chicopee High’s Taylor Choquette. Choquette brought home the first-ever girls state wrestling championship for Chicopee. Competing at the Massachusetts Youth Wrestling Associations 2017/2018 Girls’ K-12 Wrestling Championship Tournament in Boston, Choquette made her way through three matches to take the title in the 120-pound class.
In other action on the mats this weekend, several other members of the wrestling team took part in the Western Massachusetts Sectional Wrestling Tournament. Highlights included second-place finishes for both Dylan Conover at 160 pounds and Mustafa Hamid at 120 pounds. Both will move on to the Divisional State Tournament to take place at Newton South High School on Friday and Saturday.
Freshman Ramon Crespo (138 pounds) and Hector Ocampo (126 pounds) also brought home respectable finishes, coming in sixth in their respective weight classes.
